80th Anniversary - Battle of Surigao Strait

Our Deputy President Ken Orr recently visited Surigao City, Philippines, along with his wife Mel and a small group of veteran families. The group were special guests at commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Surigao Strait. Australian ships HMAS Shropshire and Arunta were involved in the Battle, the last great ship-to-ship gun battle in history.

Additionally, Ken and fellow group members provided items for the Battle of Surigao Strait Museum, which was destroyed by Typhoon Odette in 2021. This included items donated by the Southport RSL Sub-Branch, included in the Australian display. A few days after the main commemorations, the museum reopened to the public for the first time since the typhoon.
